Pana Set Sizes Explained (6 to 32 mm): Which Spanner Set Should You Buy?

A good pana set (spanner set) is the first tool most mechanics, fitters and home users buy. This guide explains spanner types, which sizes you actually need, and how to pick the right set.

Types of spanners (pana)

  • Double open end spanner: two open jaws of different sizes, for example 8 x 10 mm. Quick to slide onto nuts in tight spaces.
  • Ring spanner: closed rings grip all six sides of the nut, so they slip less on tight or rusted bolts.
  • Combination spanner: one ring end and one open end of the same size. The most useful single type.
  • Chabi pana / wheel spanner: used for wheel nuts and heavy bolts.

Which sizes do you need?

Spanner sizes in India are marked in millimetres and match the width across the flats of the nut. Common sets start at 6 mm and go up to 32 mm.

  • Two-wheelers and small machines: 8, 10, 12, 14 and 17 mm are used most often.
  • Cars and light vehicles: 10, 12, 13, 14, 17 and 19 mm.
  • Plumbing, fabrication and heavy machines: add 22, 24, 27, 30 and 32 mm.

For most homes and workshops a 6 to 22 mm set covers everyday jobs. Buy larger sizes singly when a job needs them.

How to choose a good pana set

  • Material: chrome vanadium (CrV) steel is stronger and resists wear better than plain carbon steel.
  • Finish: a chrome or polished finish resists rust.
  • Fit: a well-made spanner fits the nut snugly, which protects the bolt corners.
  • Storage: sets with a pouch or rack keep sizes in order.

Shop pana sets

Browse pana sets and spanners, impact sockets (goti) for jobs where a spanner cannot reach, and screwdrivers (pechkas) to complete your tool kit.
